Everyone has their own ideas about how to lose weight fast. Some of their ideas are good. Others are not so good.

Practically any expert will agree that liquid meal replacement plans do not work and should not be used on a regular basis, unless you are advised to do so by your doctor. Liquid diets have been around since the 1930s. If they really worked, no one would still be fat.

The worst thing is that those diets are deadly. According to the Food and Drug Administration, 58 people died because of a high protein, liquid diet plan in 1977. Yet, the new liquid shakes and cans of powder are not much different from those diets that killed people.

Low-fat, Low-carb, Low-calorie

We have been told over and over again that we can learn to lose weight fast by using one of these diets. Susan Powter said the key was to eat low fat foods. Dr. Atkins said the key was to cut carbs. Barry Sears says to “live in the zone”.

Fad diets like the “cabbage soup” diet and all of the grapefruit diets are simply low-calorie diets that might work on the short-term, but none of them work for life. The truth is that you can lose a few pounds fast by following any of the popular diet plans, but you’ll gain it all back and when it comes to the Atkins diet, you are again putting your life at risk.

The Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine provides the following information. Low-carb diets cause cholesterol levels to rise, sometimes dramatically. They accelerate calcium loss, so your bones become more brittle. Sticking with a low-carb diet may contribute to heart, kidney and other health problems.
