The Truth about Foods that Increase Metabolism

November 23rd, 2011, 11:11:12

Are there really foods that increase metabolism or naturally help your body burn fat? Is there one single food that you should be eating every day? Are there others that should be avoided at all costs? How much do we really know about metabolism, anyway?

Those are all good questions and the answers are important to anyone that has ever struggled to lose weight. I want to help you learn how you can take control of your body and lose weight naturally and safely using foods that increase metabolism.

I am saddened by the growing number of people that resort to gastric bypass and lap-band surgeries, only to find that they still do not have the body that they would like… only to struggle with food cravings that still plague them… only to end up being unable to eat like a normal person, constantly seek, tired and frustrated.

I have seen many people end up back in the hospital, sometimes needing emergency surgery to repair the damage done by eating more than their “new stomachs” could hold. Some of my own family members have been in that dangerous life-threatening position.

You see, I come from a “fat” family. So, of course, the easy way out is to blame our genetics and “accept” ourselves, as though it were natural. That’s the approach that some “experts” recommend and that’s the approach that some of my family members have taken, continuing to get fatter and fatter as time goes by.

But, some of us chose a different approach. I cannot tell you how many different diets I have been on over the years. Every time that someone came up with a new list of foods that increase metabolism, I went out and bought them.

Every time a new diet book came out, I bought it. You should see by bookshelves. I have a hard time throwing books away, so I still have these titles:

  • “Lose a Pound a Day for Thirty Days…and Never Gain it Back!”
  • “Stop the Insanity!”
  • “Dr Atkins New Diet Revolution”
  • “A Week in the Zone”

Every one of those authors claims to have discovered the secret foods that increase metabolism. Every one of them claims that their suggestions are unique and, of course, they claim to have discovered the “right” way to lose weight and keep it off.

From a nutritional standpoint, most of their dietary recommendations are relatively safe, but none of them are complete. The Atkins diet is still highly controversial, because it is not nutritionally sound.

How much do you know about the way metabolic processes work with foods that increase metabolism?

In simple terms, your metabolism is a set of chemical reactions that occur on a cellular level. It is usually divided in to two categories:

  • Catabolism, which is breaking down food in order to use it for energy
  • Anabolism, which is the construction of the molecules necessary to create a new cell and “requires” energy

In other words, one set of reactions creates energy for the cells of the body. The other uses the energy or “burns it”. We usually refer to this energy as calories. So, if your body is busy building new cells, it burns more calories.

So, we usually say that building muscle increases the resting metabolic rate, because in order to create the new muscle fibers, the body must build new cells, which requires energy, which burns calories. The higher the resting metabolic rate, the more calories we burn during the day. The more lean muscle mass that we have on our bodies, the more calories we burn.

When the calories that your body needs to function exceed the amount that you take in every day, you lose weight. BUT, if you don’t eat the right combination of foods or you try to “force” weight loss by limiting caloric intake, your body “rebels”.

Instead of burning fat stores, which is what you WANT, it starts to burn up the lean muscle. Any calorie restrictive diet “works” temporarily, in that you lose weight. But, the weight that you lose is primarily muscle and water. This makes eating foods that increase metabolism essential in any weight loss program

So, as soon as you increase your caloric intake, again, you gain all of that weight back and more, because you have lost muscle tissue. Your resting metabolic rate will be lower. You won’t be able to eat as many calories during the day as you did before the diet. So, you gain back everything that you lost and more. They call it the “yo-yo” effect.

Over the years, you may have been on a number of calorie restrictive diets and each of those diets effectively lowered your metabolic rate. That’s one of the reasons that you keep getting fatter and fatter. But, you can stop all of this.

Not only are there foods that increase metabolism, there are others that limit your “metabolic efficiency”.

In order to have optimal metabolic function, your body needs three things:

  • Amino acids (protein)
  • Carbohydrates (which is why low-carb diets negatively affect your metabolism)
  • Fats (which is why low-fat diets negatively affect your metabolism)

So, you see, the diet gurus have been lying to you all of these years. In fact, dieting has little to do with successfully controlling your weight and having the body that you want. That’s not to say that your diet or what you eat is not important, but there are other important factors, as well. So, eating foods that increase metabolism can only help a little bit.

The areas that influence your metabolism include:

  • Nutrition
  • Exercise
  • Hormonal activity
  • Build-up of toxins in the internal organs
  • Dietary supplements and metabolic “enhancers”
  • Your Mind

Of these, your mind is one of the most important pieces of the puzzle, but if you target every area, your metabolic rate will increase exponentially, in a very short time.

After all of these years and all of the books that I have bought, I have finally found a program that targets all of these areas. It is the most complete program that I have ever seen. It was developed by Christopher Guerriero, a nutritionist and founder of the “National Metabolic and Longevity Research Center”. Click here to learn more about the foods that increase metabolism.

I promise you this. It will be the best decision that you have ever made. You’ll get off the diet see-saw and never get back on it. You will also have personalized assistance, right in your own home.
