Are Exercises for Abs a Waste of Time?
The exercises for abs that you are doing might be just a waste of your time. The truth that most people don’t like to here is that no amount of crunches or any other kind of abdominal workout will give you that six-pack.
The truth is this: You Have Abs!
Yep, you have them. Everyone does. They may be hiding under a layer of fat, but they are there, assuming you are already working out on a regular basis. There are a lot of trainers in a lot of gyms that are giving people the wrong advice. Not only are they wasting your time, they might be damaging your spine. Your doctor or chiropractor will get something out of that, but you won’t.
I know. You’ve seen the guys in the infomercials and you want to look like that. They tell you that it just takes a few minutes per day…that the exercises are not difficult. Or, they tell you to take this supplement and you’ll start growing muscle where you never had it before. Or, they tell you that they have an “ab-diet”. What kind of nonsense is that?
Here are some of the things that you should NOT be doing!
That’s the biggie. Your beating up the muscles when you do that…not building them up, which is what you want to do. Think about it. The abdominal muscles are just like every other muscle on your body. Would you work out your biceps every day? Not if you want to build the muscle. Ever muscle needs time to recoup. An interesting thing about the abs is that if you use proper form, you are always giving them a workout.
Again, think about it. Would you do hundreds of curls or leg lifts? No way. You know that every other exercise that you do is 8-15 reps. Why should exercises for abs be any different?
How many of them do you have sitting around the house. If you’re like most people, you’ve got at least a couple. Hey, don’t feel bad. I had an ab-roller. I used to do a hundred crunches every day. I was just like you. But, you have an advantage that I did not. There are finally some people out there that are giving us good information. They are telling us the truth about how to build our bodies…rather than trying to sell us a stupid machine or a supplement.
This is the dangerous part. In one routine, I counted over 500 reps near the end of an aerobics class. Not only is that a waste of time, there is no way to maintain proper form, so you are very likely to injure your spine.
Now, here are some of the things that you SHOULD be doing!
Crunches help get them toned, when done correctly. Resistance training BUILDS the muscles, all over your body. And, isn’t that what you really want? Don’t you want a lean muscular attractive body that you can be proud of? There are lots of good resistance bands out there. Personally, I like BODYLASTICS…but they are not the ultimate solution.
Anyone that tells you that you can get lean and cut from doing just exercises for abs is lying to you, you need a complete plan. No one likes to hear it. Everyone wants a magic pill, but there isn’t one. Like I said earlier, your abdominal muscles are hiding under a layer of fat. If you want them to show, you have to get rid of that fat. If you went from 16% body fat to 7% body fat, for example, they would start to show. So, part of your plan must include eating to build muscle, exercising to create a calorie deficit, so that your body will burn that fat away.
The most complete programs that I have seen will allow you to do more in the next three months than you have done over the last three years and you probably have everything that you need to do it, right now, in your own home. For home workouts the best program I’ve seen is from “Truth about Abs”, forget about exercises for abs, exercise your entire body, all you need is a set of resistance bands and your good to go.
