The Best Way to Burn Fat – The Elusive Holy Grail?

Every “expert” has the “ultimate” system.
Every new machine is the perfect solution.
Every new diet is the right one for everyone.
Why are there still so many fat people?

That’s the big question. Why is the world getting fatter and fatter, when the diet and fitness industry is bringing in billions upon billions of dollars per year? I’ll tell you why.

Because they are either lying to you or giving you half truths!

The truth is that the best way to burn fat is to build muscle. It takes work and it takes a complete plan. There are a lot of products on the market that are simply a waste of money. Here’s how to spot them. If they use any of these “sales pitches”, don’t buy it.

  • Helps you burn more calories or lose weight faster than any other plan
  • Quickest way to lose weight
  • Feast on your favorite foods and still lose two pounds a day
  • Guaranteed to work for everyone

To find the best way to burn fat, you should also avoid supplements that claim to:

  • “block” the absorption of fat, carbs or calories; that’s not possible
  • Suppress your appetite; these are mostly stimulants
  • Help you build muscle faster; a supplement cannot do that
  • Help you burn harmful belly fat; they don’t work

You need a good daily multi-vitamin, because it is next to impossible to get all of the nutrients that you need for excellent health from eating. You also need a supplement that provides some of the most unique antioxidants that are only present in a few foods. Amino acids are a good choice, because your body needs them to build cells, including muscle. Research has shown that green tea is beneficial, as are a number of essential minerals. In truth, a good daily multi-vitamin, along with an omega 3 fish oil supplement will do as much to suppress your appetite as anything else.

Can colon cleansers help you lose weight?

The answer there is maybe. Toxins do build up on the intestinal walls, causing mal-absorption of vitamins and minerals from the foods that you eat. But, the companies that promote them say that everyone has parasites and plaque build-up. People who have focused on a healthy diet and avoided common toxins are unlikely to benefit from a colon cleanser.

Those who get enough fiber in their diet are also unlikely to see any benefit. But, if you feel bloated, are frequently constipated or have frequent bouts of diarrhea…if most of your weight is in or around your stomach…if you haven’t always avoided processed and fast foods…if you drink anything other than purified water…if you drink from a plastic bottle or use plastic containers in the kitchen…if you use Teflon coated pans…if any of these things apply to you, then you probably do have parasites and plaque in your gut, so a colon cleanser would be beneficial.

Just don’t think of it as a “magic pill”. There are still other things that you need to do to get to the best way to burn fat. Like I said earlier…

…the best way to burn fat is to build muscle.

How do you do that? Eat and exercise. You need to eat in such a way that you feed your muscles and encourage your body to burn fat. You need to make sure that you are getting enough calories every day. You need to create a “calorie deficit”, just not too much of one. Diet alone is not the answer. Exercise alone is not the answer and all exercises are not the same.

To build muscle, you need:

  • Strength training exercises, with cardio on alternating days
  • Alternate upper body and lower body exercises or you can work on a “push/ pull” system
  • To avoid overtraining, exercise breaks down muscle tissue, a day of resting that muscle allows it to repair itself, become stronger and GROW. Overuse can cause atrophy. Your muscles may actually become smaller.
  • To eat 1 gram of lean protein per pound of body weight

Certain muscles of the body are used to “push”, while others are used to “pull”. You will see the greatest benefits from exercising BOTH types of muscles.

But why is building muscle the best way to burn fat?

Because, muscle tissue is “active” tissue. It burns calories even when your body is at rest. Fat tissue is “dormant”. Practically every cell of the human body needs energy (calories) to operate. Fat tissue has no purpose, other than storing calories for later use. When your body perceives a small calorie deficit…the liver becomes active, converting stored-fat to energy for the cells to use. When your body perceives a large calorie deficit…something else happens.

Your body thinks you are starving!

Bodily functions were designed to prevent starvation during times of famine. Your body must believe that there is plenty of food available, but that you have just been “put to work”. As long as you are physically active and eating plenty of nutrient dense (not calorie dense, I’ll explain the difference in a moment), your body burns fat readily. This is the best way to burn fat; combine healthy eating with regular exercise.

Some professional bodybuilders and professional trainers have less than 4% body-fat when measured using the skin-fold formula. Anything under 10% is considered healthy for a man. Anything under 15% is considered healthy for a woman. Your body needs some fat-stores; just in case you became very ill and could not eat…it just doesn’t need much.

If you are not taking in enough calories, your body will refuse to burn its fat stores. It will take the glycogen from your muscles to use for cellular energy. You might think of it as cannibalizing your own body. In addition to taking glycogen from the muscles, all of your metabolic functions will slow down. Your body begins to burn fewer calories, in an effort to survive the famine.

Let’s say that you wanted to lose 10 pounds in a week, maybe for a special occasion, so you decide to fast. You could probably lose 10 pounds in three or four days by fasting, but when you started eating again, you would gain it all back and more, because you slowed down your metabolic functions. You slowed down your metabolism. Fasting and low calorie diets are not the best way to burn fat…they are the best ways to sabotage your health and your future success.

The Difference between Nutrient Dense and Calorie Dense Foods

Nutrient dense foods are whole grains, most vegetables, most fruits, boiled eggs, salmon and seafood. Calorie dense foods are cakes, pies, candy, hamburgers, hot dogs, fried foods, margarine, potato chips and even some supposedly healthy foods like granola bars, eating these foods represents the polar opposite of the best way to lose weight. Calorie dense foods have lots of calories and very little nutritional value per serving. Nutrient dense foods have fewer calories and lots of nutrients.

For example, 3 ounces of baked salmon has 184 calories, 23 grams of protein and 9 grams of fat (some of which are omega 3′s “good fats”). A double cheeseburger with lettuce, tomato and mayo has 417 calories 21 grams of protein and 21 grams of fat. In other words, you are getting twice the calories, more than twice the amount of fat, but less protein. Salmon is one of the foods that you should be eating on a regular basis. Hamburgers should be avoided at all cost. The best way to burn fat is to build muscle and your body needs protein to build muscle.
